Veneers Dentist SuttonWhat is a veneer?

A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain that is contracted to fit over the front surface of a tooth. They can sometimes be made from a composite for a more natural look.

When are veneers used?

Veneers are generally used for cosmetic reasons. They can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A single discoloured tooth can be fitted with a veneer to match your other teeth. Or we can correct the height or shape of a chipped or worn tooth by adding a veneer. Veneers can also be used to widen teeth to close a gap or to reshape a tooth that doesn’t quite fit with the others.

The fitting of a veneer or multiple veneers is a relatively simple process in comparison with other cosmetic dental procedures.

Preparing teeth for veneers?

Your Grove Road Dental Surgeon may remove a very small amount of the shine enamel surface of the tooth. This allows the veneers to bond strongly and permanently. The amount removed is exactly the same width as the veneer itself. A local anaesthetic can be administered to avoid any discomfort. Once the tooth has been prepared the dentist will take a mould and this will be passed onto the dental technician along with a colour sample and any other relevant information.

In the same way that crowns are fitted your veneer will take two visits. The first visit is for the preparation, the second visit involves fitting the veneer. You will be given an opportunity to see the veneer on your tooth before it is bonded in place with a special adhesive.

How long will a veneer last?

With the proper care a veneer should last for years. Just like your own teeth though they may chip or discolour. Your dentist can advise you on how long your veneer is likely to last. He can advise on whether a chipped veneer can be replaced.
