There are soft tissues inside your teeth called “pulp”. The pulp contains blood vessels and nerves and extends from the root of the tooth up to the crown. The pulp can become infected or inflamed by wear, fracture or gum disease.
If the relevant tooth is left untreated it can cause severe pain and bone damage.
Root canal treatment can save teeth from having to be extracted. A tooth that has been treated can function completely normally.
Grove Road Dental Practice will always anaesthetise the affected tooth prior to your root canal treatment making the procedure relatively comfortable and painless. The tooth may be additionally sensitive for a period after treatment and can be relieved with mild painkillers.
The infected pulp is removed under local anaesthetic by drilling a small opening into the tooth and cleaning out the root canal. The remnants are flushed out with an anti-bacterial solution. The canals are then filled and sealed before a crown or filling is added to completely seal the tooth and protect it against biting.
Until the crown or filling has been fitted you should avoid chewing of biting down on the affected tooth. The tooth will have a hollow area and could crack or break. Your tooth should be properly cleaned and cared for in the same way as the rest of your teeth once the treatment has finished.
